It seeks to fulfil this momentous task by encouraging both consultation between its members and the exchange of technical informationwith other industry partners and regulators at the local, national and international levels.

The association was formed thanks to the initiative of pilots' associations fromthe five continents whose representatives met in Kiel, Germany in June 1970.IMPA was officially launched in Amsterdam in May 1971.

To date, it has over 8,000 members in 54 countries. IMPA seeks to achieve its principal objective - the promotion of professionally sound and safe pilotage.

Pilot injured by defective boarding arrangements

Uruguayan Pilot Gaston Gonzales fell 18 feet (6m) from the deck of the “Saga Monal” last week, fracturing his shoulder, a vertebrae and sacrum, when a deck stanchion gave way.

Two days later the “Saga Adventure” presented herself for boarding also inbound for Neura Palmira, with the ladder arrangements seen here.

A Coast Guard inspection considered everything was ok(!) so the Uruguayan  Pilots commissioned an independent survey.

The ladder treads are not horizontal because the whole rig has been dragged forward from its reel, presumably because of the inadequate length of the Accommodation ladder.

Captain Gonzalez is safe and recovering.

More pictures of the "Saga Adventure" can be seen in the Gallery section of our website.
